At Kingdom House we believe that education is the ticket out of poverty. Our neighborhood schools have the poorest test scores in the city. As a result, this summer–with your help–we are using Summer Fun Camp to have a positive impact on those test scores.
Studies have found the effect of summers without learning is cumulative and that low-income children fall further and further behind their peers who participate in summer learning opportunities every year. In order to decrease the “summer slide” our neighborhood children face in literacy, Kingdom House will be piloting the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom School program during Summer Fun Camp.
The CDF Freedom Schools program is a literacy-rich summer program developed to serve children in communities where quality academic enrichment programming is rare, cost-prohibitive or non-existent. The CDF Freedom Schools program features a model Integrated Reading Curriculum (IRC) for reading enrichment, youth leadership development, cultural enrichment, parent empowerment, civic engagement, and social action. The CDF Freedom Schools Program boosts children’s motivation to read and generates positive attitudes towards learning, while connecting the needs of children and families to the resources of the community.
Studies of the CDF Freedom Schools program in Kansas City, conducted between 2005 and 2007, indicates children who attend CDF Freedom Schools programs score significantly higher on standardized reading achievement tests than children who attend other summer enrichment programs. African American middle school boys made the greatest gains of all.
After a literacy-rich morning session, the kids will continue their learning through fun activites and field trips in the afternoon session. Our kids deserve a future. Support Kindom House Summer Fun Camp and help ensure those futures.
Thank you for investing in futures!
